Sorry, Not Sorry #184

by Sue Hawkes

Sorry, Not Sorry #184

Language is important. For many female leaders that I know, myself included, we say we’re sorry when we shouldn’t. It’s an immediate flag screaming “less than” when you’re speaking.

One of the ways I’ve corrected this in my writing is beginning with appreciation instead.

An example would be when I would’ve liked to have responded in a timelier manner to someone’s email to me. Historically, I would’ve written something like this:

“I’m sorry for the delay in responding to your email…”

Now I write:

“Thank you for your patience with my response. I’ve given your email thoughtful consideration and…”

I’m happier with the second version and my recipients seem to agree. Small tweaks, big impact.

See for yourself:

Thank you, Pantene!
